[Channel.io] NOTICE : Temporary restriction of sending SMS
Dear valued customer,
We hope this email finds you well. Currently, sending text messages (SMS) through the Marketing feature is not working in some countries, including the United States and Canada. We are writing to inform you of the reasons for this and our action plan.
How about we indicate that countries that do not support sender ID will not be able to use this feature instead? Technically if the country support the sender ID, they can use this feature and the twilio link shows the list of countries that support sender ID.
Now : The marketing One-Time Message (OTM) feature will not be available in some countries except Korea and Japan (→ Click HERE to view the detailed list of unavailable countries)

February 5th

Scam detection: A number of company email accounts belonging to Channel.io’s customers were hacked. The hackers attempted to scam people by sending mass numbers of fraudulent SMS texts overseas using the above-mentioned emails from our platform, which was detected by our security team.
▪
Security measures: Immediately upon detection, we blocked the texting feature and proceeded to enhance the security of our system.

February 16th

Abnormal login detection and guidance feature based on the access region has been released.

February 18th
▪
SMS follow-up notification feature used for chat conversations was unblocked after the security update.

Current Status
◦

Action Plan

Week of April 1st : A quota system, based on usage patterns for each customer, will be released, deploying security policies to minimize inconvenience to actual customers.
Please note that :
•
The scam issue was not a case of your channel.
•
Customers may not have received follow-up notifications (SMS) from chat conversations between 2/6 and 2/18.
•
You will not be charged for the undelivered SMS if you attempted to send the OTM via SMS after the block(2/5).
We understand that sending the One-Time Message(OTM) via SMS feature is essential for many of our customers. We will proceed to restore service and enhance overall security as soon as possible.
Although Channel.io was not directly compromised by the scam attack, we were unable to inform you clearly in advance about the limitations of some features while updating our security precautions. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

스캠 감지 : 채널톡 고객사 중 극소수의 회사 이메일 계정이 외부에서 스캠되어, 해당 이메일로 사용하던 채널에서 해외로 대량 문자발송 시도 발생, 채널톡 보안팀 감지

차단 조치 : 발견 즉시 문자 전송 기능 차단 및 관련 보안 시스템 강화 작업 시작

2월 16일 - 접속 지역을 기반으로 하는 이상 로그인 감지 및 안내 기능 도입
•
2월 18일 - 채팅상담에 활용되는 SMS 전송 팔로업 알림 기능은 보안 업데이트 후 차단 해제
현재 상황
•
마케팅 일회성 메시지(OTM) 기능 중 한국, 일본을 제외한 일부 국가의 수신자에게 SMS 문자메시지 전송 불가 ( → 전송 불가 국가 상세 리스트)
조치 계획
•
4월 1주차 : 고객사별 사용 패턴에 따른 쿼터제 도입, 실 고객사의 불편을 최소화하는 보안 정책 배포
참고사항

스캠 이슈는 지금 운영하시는 채널에서 발생한 케이스가 아닙니다
•
2/6~2/18 동안 채팅 상담의 팔로업 알림(SMS)이 고객에게 전달되지 않았을 수 있습니다
•
차단 조치 이후 OTM을 문자로 발송 시도했더라도 미전송된 SMS는 비용 차감되지 않습니다
안전하고 원활하게 고객과 대화할 수 있도록 위와 같이 최대한 빠른 시일 내에 서비스를 복구하고 전반적인 보안을 강화하겠습니다.
고객과의 커뮤니케이션에 SMS 메시지가 얼마나 중요한 역할을 하는지 이해하고 있습니다. 채널톡이 직접 스캠 공격을 받은 상황은 아니었으나, 예방 조치를 강화하는 과정에서 일부 기능이 제한되는 점을 미리 안내하지 못했습니다. 이로 인하여 발생하는 모든 불편 사항에 대하여 진심으로 사과를 드립니다.
